Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS)
The MLS program counts layoffs of 50 people or more. To be counted as a layoff, an event must involve at least 50 people who are laid off during a period of five weeks or less, and who remain unemployed for at least 31 days.
Information about layoffs comes from Unemployment Insurance claims, and is verified by contact with employers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes data monthly and quarterly.
